Over the years we’ve worked with numerous clients on direct mail marketing campaigns – As a result, we have an inside understanding not only of what works, but what doesn’t work.

Here are 6 low cost tips to get you started.

1) Handwritten Address This doesn’t necessarily mean you need to spend the next week hand writing hundreds of envelopes. There are plenty of fonts available that look like they are handwritten. This makes your recipient feel like you have taken the time to personally write to them. A few fonts that you might want to consider are dear Joe Casual 5, hand of Sean, Angelina or my personal favorite fineliner.

2) Personalise the letter Your recipient will feel more of a personal connection if they feel they have been contact by a specific person – Such as the owner, CEO or sales manager. You can give your letter / postcard a bit of extra oomph by personally signing each one (If you don’t have time for this, scan your signature and digitally add it).

3) Address your recipient personally Anything that starts with “To Whom it may concern” or “To the owner” screams junk mail – Use a mail merged name on each individual letter to further personalise.

4) Do not use “urgent, important or confidential” on the envelope Things that are urgent are not sent by regular post – They are sent by courier or registered post. If you flag your letter as something it’s not, you will lose respect with your potential customer.

5) Consult with professionals If you are not a professional writer, leave it to the professionals. You have a limited time to grab your recipients attention and if you lose it, you most likely won’t get it back. A professional copywriter will help you get your message across with as little spin as possible. (They will ensure your letter isn’t sent out with spelling or grammar errors!)

6) Follow up You will increase your conversion rate quite substantially by following up on your recipients. A quick call to ensure they received your letter is a good way to break they ice and allows you to slowly ease into either making an appointment or to make a sale. If your looking to kick start your marketing – a direct mail campaign may be a great way to go about it.
